What does the mother of the groom wear? Well this is a very difficult question because as you may be able to image the mother of the groom is often somewhat overlooked and I do not think this is on purpose. It’s just that the bride and her mother are doing everything and have so much to do that they forget that the mother of the groom is wondering what to do also (so if you are the bride try to include his mother also).

Over the last few weeks I have been working with a mother of the groom who just cannot decide what to wear. The wedding is about 450 miles from her home so she cannot even take her dress to the bride and get her opinion.  On top of that she wanted to lose about 40 pounds before the wedding and only lost 5. So she really wants a dress that will hide her arms. The wedding is at 4:00 pm so she needs a formal gown but is afraid that the one she found is too formal.

At the moment she has picked a dress like this which can be found at:  http://www1.bloomingdales.com/.

And the dress looks absolutely fabulous on her but she wants to cover her arms. So we found a shawl but now she is worried about having to hang onto that all night and she thinks the dress is too formal. I told her the dress in not too formal even though the mother of the bride may have a less formal dress.

The best way to determine how formal the dress should be is to go by what your husband is told to wear, in this case the father of the groom. He will be wearing a formal tux so she can wear a very formal dress. If he was wearing a coat and tie this would be too formal.

With the husband wearing a tux however she could go a little less formal and be perfectly fine. In this case a very elegant tea length dress would be fine and I love that type of dress.

I love this dress (found at- http://www.dressale.com/new-style-mother-of-the-groom-dress-in-violet-with-pleated-empire-waist)and it would be find with a tux or with a coat and tie. The tea length makes it acceptable for a more or less formal wedding. And everyone is saying that navy is the new black for this year.

We will see what happens with her but if you are in this situation decide how formal to go based on what your husband is told to wear and then find something you are comfortable in.

The wedding cake is a big deal. Everyone will want to look at it and of course most people will want a piece. So it has to be big and they can be very expensive. However, if you know someone who is good at making cakes and loves to bake and design this is a place where you can really save money. I know many brides who have a relative or friend make the cake; some brides even make it themselves. But when the bride makes the cake it can be very stressful because as you can image she will have a million other things to do. The cake has to be made at the last minute so I advise you leave it to someone else.

If you and your future husband share an interest (maybe it is even the activity that brought you together) then it is fun to have the topper display that interest. Some friends met in a scuba diving class so instead of the traditional bride and groom topper they had 2 scuba divers standing side by side. It was fun for conversation and of course had a special meaning for those who knew the story.

I love the mini wedding cake idea. This way you can have different flavored cakes, after all not everyone likes chocolate cake and it is fun to have them decorated in different way. Of course this would be harder to convince a friend to do and more time consuming therefor more expensive.

We all probably realize that the old tradition of the bride and groom smashing cake into each other’s face is on its way out of style.  And it’s a good idea to taste the cake you are going to order most people do not like the super sweet cakes that many bakeries still make.

Have fun looking around and tasting!!!

WEDDING TIME

Written by Posted in Uncategorized Comments 0

Spring is approaching and we all know what that means. IT’S WEDDING TIME. Not only is it wedding time because spring is here but yesterday was Valentines Day and I bet there are quite a few newly engaged couples. So we have to start thinking about where to have the wedding, flowers and one on the most exciting things the dress. All young women love shopping for the dress.  I have known several people who have worn their mother’s, grandmother’s or aunt’s dress and this is quite a  special thing if you like the dress and if fits you. Sometime they have to be altered and that could cost as much as a new dress, but if you love the dress and it has sentimental meaning the pay for the alteration and make it a really special event.

I love this dress for a beach wedding and here in southern CA everyone loves to get married at the beach. A dress like this on a warm summer evening with a wrap would be wonderful. Just make sure you get the dress first so you can get the wrap to match because there really are a zillion different shades of white.

And for those of you that live in the country and want an outdoor country wedding like the one I wrote about in a previous article think about a dress like the one below. You may not need a wrap of any type in the country because when you get away from the cost it stays much warmer in the evening, or on a beautiful spring afternoon. In the country afternoon may be better because the bugs tend to come out at night.

No matter where you are having your wedding if it is this spring or summer start to plan right away, it will only get harder if you wait.

Oh and don’t forget a backyard wedding is always great and can save a ton of money, everyone can bring a dish to share and have a great time.

Good Luck!!! Will be back with more soon.

Wedding Ideas

It seems that for the last few years I have been going to one wedding after the next. Of course all weddings have their own style which is mainly dictated by the bride and her family. Being from the south the majority of the weddings I attend are very formal so there is a lot of similarity. But one was quite different from the rest. This wedding had more of a country flare; as a matter of fact it was almost a carnival atmosphere.

The church service was at 3 pm and the church was small so many guest were told they could skip the church and just show up for the reception. If you are from the south you know that this is just not proper behavior but as you can image many guests did just this. Also children of all ages were invited to the wedding. And this is where is got fun because at the reception there were many activities for children, as though it was a child’s birthday party. And yes we had checkered tablecloths.

My main reason for writing about this wedding is to give my readers ideas for their wedding if they wish to have something like this. Wandering around the reception was a balloon twister and absolutely everyone loved him. He could crate anything you could think of. Many of the younger children came home with a Jedi headgear and light sword which they were still wearing around the hotel (where us out of town guests stayed) the next day. However, to complete these outfits the was a booth for face painting, so adults and children alike might be wearing the gear and have their face painted to help complete the look (of course they had to keep their same cloths on). The band was great and almost everyone danced because the theme was line dancing so young and old could join in and you did not need a partner, just the desire to dance.

The greatest thing about this wedding is that 6 months later everyone who was there is still talking about it. So if you want people to remember your wedding for a long time then add some usual activity. Although the event was quiet unique and most said they had never seen anything like it everyone, and I mean everyone, absolutely loved it.
